In Bloom

I love this time of the year when my roses start blooming.  I get a new rose most years, and this year the antique white rose that I got last year is my new favorite.  It smells so good and the blooms are gorgeous!  I couldn't resist cutting a few blooms from each of the bushes to bring inside.

So pretty!! We planted a few rose bushes this year. How long did it take your bushes to grow? They are blooming beautifully, but they are not very bug bushes. I'm wondering if they will double in size by next year?

I tried a rose bush when we moved into this house... it didn't make it! What are your secrets? :)

Tiffany, they should be a lot bigger next year. The key is to trim that back in February. You want to cut them back to about half of their size. They will grow a ton after you do that and be a lot more full than they would be otherwise. Plus keep them fertilized with rose food. :)

Amanda, I don't think I have a secret! When you plant them you want to give them some sandy soil at the bottom so that they drain well. They don't like wet roots and our clay soil in North Texas isn't the best for drainage. Other than that I think that trimming them back in Feb and keeping them watered and fertilized is key. And giving them plenty of sun. :)
